Hannah Goldstein, Psy.D

My approach is relational and depth-oriented, focusing on the root causes of your struggles rather than just the surface symptoms. Therapy is a place where you come to discover the contours of your mind. Relationally, within a connected, supportive, and honest therapy relationship, I will elicit curiosity and challenge you to process and explore in new ways. Together, we’ll strive to open up new ways of relating, give you more agency in your life, and address what brings you to therapy in a holistic, expansive way. Ultimately, I see you as the co-author of our work: the expert of your experience. I will look to you to collaborate, take risks, and share your mind with me. My style is active, curious, direct, and attuned.

People are adaptive; we do the best with the tools that we have. Whatever brings you to therapy likely reflects a way of being that once served you, a strategy that helped you adapt. This is one reason change can feel so difficult: we hold on to what has worked. I’m here to help you find compassion for those old strategies, understand their function, and imagine new ways of being that allow you to thrive.

Rooted in a relational psychodynamic approach, I consider early experiences formative in shaping how we navigate the world. I also draw attention to aspects of experience that exist beyond conscious awareness. As a systemic psychotherapist, I consider one’s inner world to be inseparable from the social structures that shape it. I aim to provide a warm and intentional space for folks to explore how personal, environmental, and societal interactions impact not only their distress but also their well-being. Drawing from feminist approaches, I create space for the authority and integrity of my clients to decide what is explored in therapy, and I am committed to honoring the real, material constraints and concerns of living in the present moment, which now, as much as ever, continue to mount.

I am passionate about working with individuals and couples. I specialize in issues of identity, trauma, and relational challenges. I am passionate about working with individuals and couples who identify as a part of marginalized or alternative communities, including those navigating alternative relationship structures. I also work with people who want to explore aspects of socially dominant identities, such as whiteness or masculinity, with curiosity and openness. Helping you explore an authentic expression of who you are in the world is what brings me to this work.

The frames that guide my work are not just theoretical; they are practices I also hold myself accountable to. As a queer person who also carries many dominant identities, I know the importance of noticing the impact I have on others and showing up with humility and repair when I fall short. I don’t ask clients to do work I am unwilling to do myself. In therapy, this creates a space where we can explore how power, identity, and connection shape our lives, and open up new ways of relating, both in session and in the world beyond.

I studied English and Political Science at Colgate University before earning my Doctorate in Psychology at the George Washington University Professional Psychology Program. While there, I also taught psychological assessment to early clinicians. My clinical training has taken me from community clinics, where I worked with individuals and couples, to an inpatient psychiatric hospital, where I completed my doctoral training. In addition to my clinical work, I remain actively engaged in research, contributing to the field through publications and presentations.

I am honored to walk alongside you in this work.
